The initial treatment for the hemorrhoids is to get relief from the symptoms. You can get relief for internal hemorrhoids by using the following methods.

Sitz bath – In order to improve the blood circulation and reduce the swelling and pain in the affected part, you could take Sitz bath wherein you will sit in warm water covering your hips/ buttocks. In this method, the patient takes bath in warm water bathtub covering his buttocks and hips; this will increase the circulation of blood in that area thereby reducing the discomfort and swelling.

Ice Packs – For severe cases of hemorrhoids, ice packs can be applied in the anal area.

Apply hemorrhoidal cream, petroleum jelly, cortisone cream, and suppositories on the affected areas.

Wear loose clothing and cotton underwear.

After every bowel movement, the anus must be cleaned with moist toilet paper.

Pain killers – reduces the discomfort and itchy feeling but are not meant for curing hemorrhoids.

Enemas – normally acts as a bowel stimulant.Enema functions as a bowel stimulant.

OTC medications

Treatment of hemorrhoid using OTC medications is possible if it is in the early stages. Some of the commonly used types of medicines are creams, petroleum jellies, ointments, and laxatives. The well-known method is to apply hemorrhoids cream that has hydrocortisone and antiseptics.

The following treatments are given for curing internal hemorrhoids.

Rubber Band Ligation – This treatment is carried out at the outpatient department; this is useful for treating 2nd degree internal hemorrhoids. This treatment is normally executed in the outpatient section for treating 2nd degree internal hemorrhoids.

Injection Sclerotherapy – In this method, a chemical solution is injected into the mucous membrane that is located nearer to the hemorrhoid. This chemical facilitates veins inflammation and closure and this shrinks the hemorrhoid.

Infrared Photocoagulation – is useful for treating small/medium size hemorrhoids. Using an IR device, the surgeon applies IR heat on the hemorrhoids thereby coagulating the dilated veins. The blood vessels coagulate and stop the blood flow thereby eliminating the hemorrhoids.

Laser Coagulation – This is a relatively new technique wherein electric current is passed through the hemorrhoid. The electric current causes a chemical reaction that shuts down blood supply to the hemorrhoid thereby causing it to shrink.

Hemorrhoidectomy – a surgical procedure. Groups of hemorrhoids in the anal canal are removed surgically by using a scalpel, laser or cautery device.
